The unique composition of the Chesapeake Bay, a combination of Atlantic seawater and freshwater tributaries, allows many species to thrive.

Nearly half of the nation's Blue Crabs are retrieved from the Bay, and the more than 4,400 miles of shoreline are used as spawning grounds for commercial fish and shellfish.

The Bay is the largest estuary in the United States, and the most productive in the world.
